Based on transcripts from a real encounter that took place in Montreal in December 2017, this verbatim play introduces four contrasting real-life citizens: James, Valerie, Hope, and Shane. Getting to know each other over a meal, they engage in a dialogue both funny and tense on the issues that most divide them.
More Info
VALERIE /// Antagonizing – Sharp – Right-wing activist
Valerie is not afraid of antagonism – she might even like it! In her early seventies, she makes a point of speaking her truth, even if it hurts.
SHANE /// Activist – Confident – Left wing
Shane is a young combative intellectual who self-identifies as “queer, Jewish and anarchist”. He advocates strongly for social justice and claims to be speaking for the oppressed.
HOPE /// Open-minded – Cautious – Half-hearted liberal
Hope is a middle-aged accountant. Born in Jamaica and raised in Canada, she’s tentatively calls herself a liberal but doesn’t hold strong political views. She thinks political discussion can be dangerous.
JAMES /// Inquisitive – Benevolent – Rightist
James is a 21 year-old university student. Head of a conservative group on his campus, he likes to have his ideas challenged and believes in the value of open dialogue.
THANKS TO OUR FOUR ARTFUL CITIZENS
Porte Parole wishes to personally thank the “real-life” Valerie, Shane, Hope et James. This play was made possible by their generosity and their boldness, their willingness to take risks and to express their intimate convictions about delicate topics.
Whether or not you share their opinions, we are convinced that they will inspire a desire to engage in this ongoing discussion.
