Based on transcripts from a real encounter that took place in Montreal in May 2018, this verbatim play introduces four dynamic women: Isabelle, Yara, Riham, and Josée. Getting to know each other over a meal, they engage in a dialogue both funny and tense on the issues that most divide them. Moderated by Alex Ivanovici and Brett Watson.

More Info

JOSÉE  ///  AssertiveActivist – Right-wing
Josée is thoroughly outspoken! Ex-member of a far-right group called La Meute, she has strong opinions on everything.  Paradoxically, she proves to be very curious about others.

RIHAM  ///  Soft-spoken – Apprehensive – Not very politicized
Riham advocates for the recognition of all differences. She sees herself as very religious and wears the hijab. She feels rejected by Quebec society and fears hate crimes against the Muslim community.

ISABELLE  ///  Moderate – Cartesian – Center-right leanings
Isabelle is Senior Vice-president of an economic consultancy firm. The daughter of French parents, she claims strong secular values. She is concerned that religious groups are increasingly visible and recognized.

YARA  ///  Activist – Passionate – Leftist
Yara is digital marketing strategist. She calls herself a fourth-wave feminist and a leftist. Raised in French by Lebanese parents, she feels stronger links to the English-speaking community of Quebec.

THANKS TO OUR FOUR ARTFUL CITIZENS

Porte Parole wishes to personally thank the “real-life” Josée, Riham, Isabelle and Yara. This play was made possible by their generosity and their boldness, their willingness to take risks and to express their intimate convictions about delicate topics.

Whether or not you share their opinions, we are convinced that they will inspire a desire to engage in this ongoing discussion.
