I visited our rehearsal space in Mile End a few days ago. It was the middle of the Montreal heatwave (I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone how hot it was!) and working without air-conditioning was uncomfortable – to say the least. Because of the noise of construction outside, director André Perrier had to close the windows. A solitary fan provided the only moving air.
Marie-Josée Gauthier, Brett Watson, Maude-Laurendeau Mondoux – guided by director André Perrier – were fanning themselves with their scripts. The team has returned to rehearsal recently, with a new-and-improved version of Sexy béton Part 1 in hand. I watched some of the rehearsal and snapped some photos.

This particular scene gets to the heart of possible skullduggery in Montreal construction circles. Maude is questioning a contractor (played by Marie-Josée Gauthier) who recalls how infrastructure work was conducted back in the 1960s and 1970s. Fudgy numbers, poor oversight. Nothing you could easily prove, of course. Just a vague sense of impropriety.
Having just joined the Sexy béton project, it was great to finally see the actors in the flesh and see the words from the printed page starting to come alive. Felt kind of like… theatre.
